The Structure and Roots of Our Program

We use the metaphor of a tree to describe our structure. Like a tree, our spiritual growth is dependent on our support systems. As the tree grows, it reaches both up and out. The trunk gets taller, thicker, stronger. Old branches support new branches and new branches also can grow directly out of the tree trunk. And as the branches spread, so do the roots spread, holding up the tree, anchoring it to the earth and feeding it.

In our tradition, Branch Members are members of the Outer Coven who consider themselves part of the Coven but do not have responsibilities nor any training within the Tradition. The branches symbolize movement, extension, and excitement, soaking up sunshine through their leaves to feed our souls and strengthen our Coven. Branch Members are expected to attend at least one open ritual per year. Branch Members can attend all open rituals & workshops and can vote in our yearly congregational meeting if they have attended at least one ritual in the past year.

Root Members represent the roots that hold us firmly in the ground, our anchoring system that keeps the Coven rooted and strong. As a responsible participant of Horn and Cauldron, you will recognize that there is significant work required for every ritual. It is not sustainable for just Clergy and students to accomplish it all, and assistance in preparing for the ritual is very much needed and appreciated. There are many ways for one to assist, and the hope is that as one becomes more comfortable working with the Coven that one becomes a Root Member. Root Members take several classes to learn about our Tradition, our Coven, and many magical and other Root Member skills to support the Coven. They can assist in ritual setup and breakdown, groundings, welcoming new members, hosting prior to ritual and immediately after rituals, assisting with orientations, and many other possibilities.

The trunk of the tree is our Clergy and Clergy Training Program. The trunk of the tree feeds the branches and the leaves. Bringing nourishment up through the roots into the trunk and out to the branches, leaves, flowers, fruit, and seeds that make up the tapestry of our lives, the Clergy Training Program is the conduit through which the sap flows to enrich our lives. Through strong leadership and guidance, the trunk, or Clergy Program, stands solid supporting the branches while the essentials of daily life continue its consistently changing relationship with the world. A tree will survive with a strong root and trunk system. Even if all the branches are cut off, the tree will continue to grow developing new branches.
